Can a 100 Amp Panel Handle a Heat Pump Water Heater?

Usually yes — it gets tight if your cooking, drying and water heating are electric. With a heat pump water heater on 100 A service, an example 1,500 ft² home reaches about 55 A (green) with gas appliances and 83 A (yellow) with an electric range, dryer and water heater (NEC® 220.83).

That leaves about 45 A free in the gas home and 17 A in the electric one. In the electric home the new unit replaces the old one, so the load barely changes. If it’s tight, “choose a 120 v heat pump water heater” brings the busier home to about 78 A.

  • Add an energy management system

A listed load manager or circuit-sharing device keeps one large load (a hot tub, water heater or dryer) off while others run. Ask your electrician which load it could manage.

  • Choose a 120 V heat pump water heater

Plug-in units run on a standard 15 A circuit and skip the 4,500 W element. Recovery is slower, so size the tank up.

  • Upgrade the panel or service

A main panel replacement in a single-family home had a median cost of about $3,500 in a 2025 national survey. If the service itself must grow, utility-side costs add a similar median amount, and rewiring can push totals to $30,000 or more.

Questions

Should I pick a 120 V or 240 V heat pump water heater?

A 120 V unit plugs into an outlet and adds little load, but recovers slower. A 240 V hybrid recovers faster and counts like a 4,500 VA electric water heater.

Why is the calculated load lower than my breakers add up to?

Breakers are sized to protect wires, not to describe what runs at once. The NEC® load calculation starts from floor area, kitchen and laundry circuits and appliance nameplates, then applies demand factors.

How accurate is this estimate?

It follows the NEC® 220.83 method with the numbers you enter. Defaults stand in for unknown nameplates, so treat it as an estimate; a licensed electrician and your inspector make the final call.

What do green, yellow and red mean?

Green means the calculated demand is up to 80% of your service, yellow 80–100%, red over 100%. The 80% line is our margin for future loads, not a code rule.
